Introduction

Age of War is a classic strategy and base defense game originally released as a Flash game in 2007 by Louissi. It has since been remastered in HTML5 for modern browsers and mobile devices, maintaining its popularity as one of the pioneering tower defense games.

The game combines elements of warfare, resource management, and progression through historical eras. Players start in the Stone Age and evolve through five distinct ages, each with unique units, turrets, and special abilities. The objective is to reduce the opponent’s base health to zero while protecting your own.

How to play

Game setup

  • Choose difficulty: Before starting, select a difficulty level (e.g., Easy, Medium, Hard, or Impossible) to adjust the AI’s strength.
  • Base overview: Your base is on the left side of the screen, with a health bar above it. The enemy’s base is on the right, with its own health bar. Your goal is to deplete the enemy’s health to zero while protecting your base.

Gameplay

  • Spawning units: Use the toolbar at the top left to spawn units (e.g., clubmen in the Stone Age). Each unit costs gold, displayed in the upper left corner. Click to deploy units, which automatically march toward the enemy base.
  • Earning resources:
    • Gold: Earn gold by defeating enemy units or over time. Use gold to spawn more units, build turrets, or create turret spots.
    • Experience (XP): Gain XP by killing enemy units. Accumulate enough XP to evolve to the next age.
  • Evolving Ages: The game progresses through five ages:
    • Stone Age: Basic units like clubmen and slingshot men.
    • Ancient Age: Archers and swordsmen.
    • Medieval Age: Knights and catapults.
    • Modern Age: Riflemen and tanks.
    • Future Age: Robots and hover tanks. Each age unlocks new units, turrets, and a unique special attack (e.g., artillery strikes or meteors). Evolving costs XP and upgrades your technology.
  • Defense
    • Build turrets (up to four) to defend your base. Turrets vary by age (e.g., rock catapults in the Stone Age, laser turrets in the Future Age).
    • Purchase additional turret spots for more defensive options.
    • Use the “Sell” option to remove turrets and recover some gold.
    • Special Attacks: Each age provides a special attack with a cooldown (e.g., gods raining rocks in the Stone Age). Use these strategically when overwhelmed or to clear enemy waves.

Strategy tips

  • Balance Offense and Defense: Spawn enough units to attack the enemy base while maintaining turrets to repel enemy units. Overcommitting to offense can leave your base vulnerable.
  • Turret placement: Prioritize turrets like the egg shooter or blue laser turrets in later ages for efficient defense. Place them to maximize coverage.
  • Unit management: Early on, use cheap units like clubmen to build an army. In later ages, combine high-health melee units with ranged support units (e.g., a swordsman with archers).
  • Special attack timing: Save special attacks for large enemy waves or when your base is under heavy pressure. Timing is critical, especially on higher difficulties.
  • Economy management: Avoid overspending gold early. Build a steady income by defeating enemies and use it to scale your army and defenses.
  • Progression: Evolve to the next age as soon as you have enough XP to gain access to stronger units and turrets, but ensure your base is defended before evolving
